The death toll from fire outbreak at a residential complex in Tai Po, Hong Kong, has risen to 55, with over 270 people still reportedly unaccounted for.
According to Hong Kong officials on Thursday morning, the fire outbreak which happened on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, has been brought under control.

The initial death toll on Wednesday was 36. Local media reports say at least three construction company executives have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter connected to flammable materials, including mesh and plastic sheets which are thought to have allowed the fire to spread quickly.

Authorities classified the fire as a level five inferno, considered the most serious level in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Chief Executive, John Lee, disclosed in a Facebook post that the city government has arranged inspections of “all housing estates undergoing major repairs” to check the “safety of scaffolding and building materials.”
