Lawmakers in Japan’s bicameral parliament have elected the conservative chair of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Sanae Takaichi, as the country’s first-ever female Prime Minister.
Sanae was elected on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 during the parliament’s sitting in Tokyo.
The 64-year-old Sanae garnered 237 and 125 votes in the lower and upper chambers of the parliament, respectively.

She becomes the 104th Prime minister in Japan’s post-war era.

She was elected earlier in October was the Liberal Democratic Party’s first female chair. Soon after, she experienced a setback when the LDP’s long-time ally Komeito upended the government coalition.

Who is Sanae Takaichi?
Sanae was born on March 7, 1961 in Yamatokoriyama City in Nara Province.
She studied at Kobe University and after her graduation, she worked as an author, legislative aide, and broadcaster before entering politics.

She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1993 as an independent, moving on to join the LDP.
Since 1993, she has been reelected to the House of Representatives nine times.
