The President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, has without any explanation dissolved the country’s government, going ahead to appoint Braima Camará as the new Prime Minister.
The dissolved government was led by Rui Duarte de Barros.
Guinea-Bissau is preparing for general elections on November 23.
According to a presidential decree issued on August 7, 2025, President Embaló formally dissolved the Barros administration.
A second decree, signed the same day, names Braima Camará as Prime Minister.
Neither document offers any reason for the dismissal of the outgoing cabinet nor for the appointment of the new executive leader, whose swearing-in could take place at any time.
The move reshuffles the political landscape just months ahead of the legislative and presidential elections.
Embaló and Camará were longtime allies within MADEM-G15, a party that emerged from a split in the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), their original political home.
However, their alliance fractured after Embaló came to power, amid internal dissensions within the ruling majority.
Both presidential decrees took immediate effect.
