Government to Launch Ghanaian Music Streaming Platform in November – Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

In a major move to boost the local music industry, Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that Ghana will soon introduce its first local music streaming platform.

The initiative, set for a November launch, aims to address long-standing concerns about financial returns for musicians in the country.

During a meeting with key stakeholders in the arts and tourism sectors, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for a homegrown solution that better supports Ghanaian musicians.

“Spotify and other platforms are externally owned, so it’s not surprising that the payments to our musicians are very little,” he said, highlighting the minimal earnings that artists receive from international streaming services.

According to the flagbearer, this new platform will centralize Ghanaian music, offering a space where local content can be easily accessed and better monetized. “The issue for us has been to ensure we have a local streaming platform where we can put all the catalogues from A to Z that we can find in Ghana,” he explained.

He further mentioned that the project is a collaborative effort involving MUSIGA, the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), music producers, and the private sector. The platform is expected to revolutionize how revenue is managed and royalties tracked, creating new opportunities for content creators.

Dr. Bawumia also expressed his excitement over the progress made, stating, “I’m very happy to let you know that the work has been completed. We are ready to launch the first local streaming platform for Ghanaian musicians and film producers next month, in November.”

The platform is anticipated to be a game-changer, helping musicians and filmmakers in Ghana maximize their earnings and reach wider audiences while promoting local content.
