WASHINGTON D.C. — A U.S. judge has ruled that Google does not need to sell off its Android operating system or its Chrome browser in a landmark monopoly case. The decision comes after a finding last year that the tech giant acted illegally to maintain a monopoly in online search.
The judgment orders Google to share data with rivals to help open up competition in the online search market. The company was sued by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2020 over its control of about 90% of the online search market.
The ruling represents a mixed outcome for the government, which sought to break up the company’s business, and for Google, which will now face new obligations to its competitors.
