The Government of Nigeria has disclosed that former President Goodluck Jonathan is safe and has departed Guinea-Bissau where he was trapped following a coup d’etat in the West African nation.
A statement released by Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Ministry on Thursday, November 27, 2025, said Mr. Jonathan left Guinea-Bissau on a special flight alongside members of his delegation.
The statement signed by the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said “Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau.”
The statement added that “He left on a special flight with members of his delegation, including Mohamed Chambas.”
A group of soldiers appeared on Guinea-Bissau state television on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, saying they have seized power and taken “total control” of the country.
The soldiers then ordered the closures of Guinea-Bissau’s land, air and sea borders, leaving Mr. Jonathan and hundreds of election observers stranded.
Incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embalo later told France24 that he has been “deposed”.
Both President Embalo and his challenger Fernando Dias had claimed victory in the November 23, 2025 presidential election.
Guinea-Bissau’s electoral commission was scheduled to declare the official results this Sunday. But the soldiers ordered the Commission to put all election activities on hold until “further notice.”
