Ghana’s Youth Impact Parliament holds its First Bicameral Joint Legislative Sitting

 

The Youth Impact Parliament (YIP) Ghana of Youth Impact Movement has held it’s first Joint Sitting of both it’s Pilot Senate (Upper Chamber) and its Fourth Parliament (Lower Chamber) in Ho the Volta Regional Capital, marking a significant milestone in youth governance.

The President of the Senate, H.E. Jones Amegashie-Viglo emphasized the importance of unity as both chambers, whiles the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Adam Usman called for the commitment of Youths to Nation Building as the Senate and the Parliament came together for the first time on Sunday, 22nd September, 2024.

Honourable Kofi Attor, Chief of Staff at the Office of the Speaker of Parliament of the Republic of Ghana, delivered a keynote address detailing Ghana’s history, notably the contributions of Kwame Nkrumah. His insights were aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of national identity among the youth.

During the sitting, outstanding youth parliamentarians were honoured for their vigilance and commitment. Acknowledgement was also given to patrons, including Honourable Attor, reinforcing the supportive network behind YIP’s mission.

The session transitioned into a debate concerning the motion that voting in Ghana’s general elections should be mandatory. The Youth Parliamentarians won the debate by opposing the motion.

Both the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the Parliament encouraged members to approach their roles with dignity, emphasizing their duty to represent youth interests and foster a brighter future for Ghana.

Hon. Attor reiterated the importance of such initiatives in training youth on parliamentary processes and promoting active civic engagement. He underscored that understanding democracy is essential for future leadership.

The event concluded with a collective call for sustained engagement among youth leaders. As the First Bicameral Youth Legislature, Youth Impact Parliament aims to inspire a new generation committed to shaping Ghana’s democratic future.
