A coalition of opposition political parties in Ghana has declared a nationwide protest over the recent suspension of Ghana’s Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama and termination of other public appointments.

In a statement, the coalition said the protest will take place on Monday, May 5, 2025.

The Parties including the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) vowed to resist what they described as a “reckless assault” on Ghana’s democracy.

They labeled the suspension of the Chief Justice and the termination of several public service appointments as unlawful.

In a statement issued after an emergency meeting on Thursday, April 24, the parties cautioned that the soul of Ghana’s constitutional order is under siege.

In the statement, they said: “This is not about politics. This is about principle. This is a fight for Ghana.”

The coalition is made up of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM).

The parties have urged all Ghanaians, civil society organisations, and religious groups to join what they call a non-partisan, national call to defend judicial independence.

They said in their statement that: “We will not allow political power to erode the foundations of our republic.”
