Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, has written to President John Mahama, officially asking him to provide her with copies of petitions seeking her removal from office.
This move comes after the president received three petitions and forwarded them to the Council of State for advice, as stipulated in the constitution.
In her letter, Chief Justice Torkonoo emphasized the importance of due process, stating, “I am by this letter humbly and respectfully asking His Excellency the President and eminent members of the Council of State to forward the petitions against me to me and allow me at least seven days after receipt of the same to provide my response to you…”.
She requested that her response be considered as part of the consultation process under Article 146(6) of the constitution, which may lead to the setup of a Committee of Inquiry under Article 146(7).
This development is not the first time Chief Justice Torkonoo has faced calls for her removal. Previously, President Nana Akufo-Addo was petitioned to remove her from office over alleged misbehavior and incompetence ². However, the current situation involves three petitions filed with President Mahama, who has forwarded them to the Council of State for advice.
