Members of a Ghanaian pressure group, Arise Ghana, have besieged the US Embassy in Accra, demanding the return from the USA of former Finance Minister of Ghana, Ken Ofori-Atta, to stand trial in corruption-related charges.
Gathering outside the premises of the Embassy in Cantonment, a suburb of Accra, the protesters urged US authorities to work with their Ghanaian counterparts and ensure the return of Ofori-Atta.
According to them, accountability must be enforced without exception, saying the demonstration was aimed at highlighting their demand that Ofori-Atta “return to Ghana to face justice.”
They said no public official should be allowed to evade accountability.
Wielding placards with inscriptions such as “Ken’s Leadership Killed Ghanaians”, “Ken Is Needed In Ghana”, “Let Ofori-Atta Face Justice”, the protesters said they would continue to demonstrate until Ofori-Atta returns to Ghana.

A member of the group, Bernard Monah, told journalists during the protest at the US Embassy on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 that “We all know that as of now, Ken Ofori-Atta is no longer sick. He went to the U.S. to seek medical attention, and now he has healed himself and overstayed his visa.”
Monah alleged “When he was flagged to be arrested, he went ahead to apply to be permanent.”
According to him, “This means that he has no plan to return to Ghana. He is avoiding coming back to face justice.”
