Ghanaian Suspect Confesses to 15 Murders as Police Arrest Two Over Night Watchman’s Killing in Wa

Police in the Upper West Region of Ghana have arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of a night security guard, with one of the suspects reportedly confessing to the murder of 15 people across the region.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, ACP Francis Yiribaare, revealed that one of the suspects, Sherif Abdullai, admitted to committing multiple murders in the Wa Municipality, as well as in Bole and Banda in the Savannah Region.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to having killed 15 people in the Wa Municipality since 2021, including the recent killing of Issah Yahaya, the night watchman,” ACP Yiribaare stated.

According to police reports, Abdullai said he typically targeted night watchmen and mentally challenged individuals. He also admitted to killing three mentally ill persons and two watchmen in Bole, one mentally ill man in Banda Nkwanta, and one mentally ill woman in Bamboi — all in the Savannah Region. The suspect allegedly carried his victims into nearby bushes, where he buried them secretly.

Both suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

The arrests come amid an ongoing police investigation into the murder of a security guard identified as Issah Yahaya, also known as “Soldier”, whose body was recently discovered under a shed near Wa’s new market with severe head injuries and a knife lodged in his chest.

Authorities say the case has reignited fears of serial killings in the region. Between 2021 and 2022, several night security guards in Wa and surrounding areas were reported missing or found dead under similar circumstances, with some victims discovered in shallow graves and showing signs of mutilation, raising suspicions of ritual motives.

Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and have pledged to bring all perpetrators to justice.
