In a significant diplomatic effort, President John Dramani Mahama is spearheading Ghana’s push to reintegrate Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso into the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The three Sahel nations had announced their departure from ECOWAS in January 2024, citing dissatisfaction with the regional bloc’s approach to governance and security issues.
According to Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, President Mahama has already appointed a special envoy to engage with the leaders of the three countries and is planning diplomatic visits in the coming weeks. Ablakwa expressed confidence in Mahama’s diplomatic abilities, stating, “I do not doubt that, given his track record in diplomacy, he will succeed”.
Ghana’s foreign policy under Mahama’s administration will prioritize economic diplomacy and strategic partnerships, aiming to yield tangible benefits for ordinary Ghanaians. Ablakwa emphasized, “We are determined to demystify foreign affairs… We will prioritize economic diplomacy and ensure that our international relations impact people’s livelihoods” .
Furthermore, Ghana is exploring potential engagement with BRICS, the economic bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Ablakwa noted that a Mahama-led government would assess the benefits of joining BRICS while maintaining strong relationships with traditional partners like the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.
As Mahama navigates this complex diplomatic landscape, his efforts are seen as a crucial step towards rebuilding regional ties and promoting economic cooperation in West Africa.
