The Ashanti Regional Chairman of Ghana’s main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, was rushed to a hospital on Tuesday, May 27, after reportedly falling ill while being interrogated by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra.
Illness During Interrogation
Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, confirmed the development, disclosing that his client was receiving medical treatment. However, he declined to provide the name or location of the medical facility, citing concerns for Wontumi’s privacy.
Ongoing Investigation
Appiah Kubi mentioned that the interrogation of Chairman Wontumi has not been completed and that they would return to EOCO once his condition improves. “We haven’t finished with the interrogation, so we will come back to continue hopefully [Wednesday] if his condition improves.”
Additional Legal Matters
The lawyer also addressed a recent writ of summons filed by Exim Bank against Chairman Wontumi, stating that they would respond to the pleadings. “Nevertheless, we have also received a writ of summons from Exim Bank and we are going to respond to the pleadings tomorrow.”
Background of Arrest
Wontumi was invited by the CID to assist with investigations linked to alleged illegal mining activities. He was subsequently picked up by EOCO officials for further questioning, prompting protests from NPP supporters and party executives.
Party Reaction
NPP figures, including Henry Nana Boakye and Titus Glover, accused the government and EOCO of engaging in politically motivated actions. They warned that the party would resist any effort to weaponize state institutions against its members.
Key Points:
Wontumi’s Illness: Chairman Wontumi falls ill during EOCO interrogation and is rushed to hospital.
Ongoing Investigation: Interrogation not completed, to resume once Wontumi’s condition improves.
Additional Legal Matters: Exim Bank writ of summons to be responded to.
