President John Dramani Mahama has officially directed the immediate recall of Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed (popularly known as Baba Jamal) from his role as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria. The decision was announced on Saturday, February 7, 2026, following Baba Jamal’s successful bid for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary ticket.
The Ayawaso East Primary
The recall is directly linked to Baba Jamal’s participation in the NDC parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency. In a tightly contested race that captured significant public interest, Baba Jamal secured 431 votes, narrowly defeating his opponent, Hajia Amina Adam, who polled 399 votes.
Rationale for the Recall
While the NDC primaries were marked by various allegations of vote inducement across several constituencies, President Mahama clarified that the action against Baba Jamal was based on his status as a serving public officer.
According to a statement signed by Minister of Communication Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President emphasized the following:
- Integrity of Office: The need to uphold the standards and neutrality expected of high-ranking diplomatic and public officials.
- Code of Conduct: Ensuring strict compliance with the Government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.
- Unique Case: Although other candidates faced scrutiny, Baba Jamal was the only serving public officer among those involved in the recent contests.
Implementation of the Directive
The recall takes effect immediately. The President has instructed the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to oversee the necessary administrative and diplomatic protocols to facilitate Baba Jamal’s return to Ghana and the transition of leadership at the High Commission in Abuja.
While the NDC continues its internal investigations into the conduct of the broader primaries, this move serves as a decisive administrative response to the intersection of active diplomatic service and partisan electoral politics.
