Ghana Mourns Highlife King Daddy Lumba: Homage Venue Relocated Amid Noise Ban

ACCRA, GHANA — Ghanaians will gather in Accra today to honour Charles Kwadwo Fosu, celebrated as Daddy Lumba, marking a week in homage to a man whose voice once echoed across generations. Originally planned for the University of Ghana Stadium, the observance will now unfold at the Independence Square, also known as Black Star Square.

This change was prompted by a directive from the La State Council, which, in a formal statement issued on August 28, 2025, reiterated a strict ban on noise-making, funerals, and funeral-related gatherings within the La Traditional Area from August 11 to September 5, 2025. Since the initial venue fell within that jurisdiction, the family faced the difficult choice to either postpone the event or relocate it. They chose the latter, preserving both the date and the dignity of the event.

Announcement

The switch was first announced on DLFM 106.9, the radio station founded by Daddy Lumba himself. It was later confirmed by Philip Kwabena Agyemang, known as Roman Fada, the family spokesperson and manager. He encouraged Ghanaians to come together in love and celebration to honour the deceased local music icon.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this change may cause and appreciate your understanding. Please, come and show love as we celebrate the music icon,” he said.

Profile

For over three decades, Daddy Lumba reigned as Ghana’s undisputed Highlife king, releasing more than 30 albums and over 200 songs that cut across themes of love, faith, social truth and resilience. From his early beginnings in Nsuta in the Ashanti Region to his groundbreaking collaborations in Germany and his eventual solo dominance, he became more than a musician; he was the soundtrack to everyday Ghanaian life.

Songs such as Aben Wo Aha, Makra Mo, Yentie Obiaa, Theresa and Sika Asem not only entertained but also articulated the collective hopes and struggles of his people. His mastery of Asante Twi, laced with proverbs and wit, cemented his place as a poet of the people.

Songs

Some of Daddy Lumba’s timeless hits that continue to resonate with fans include Odo Nti, Anidasoɔ Wɔhɔ Ma Obiara, Bubra, Back for good, Adaka Tia, Dangerous, Woho Kyere, Akoma Da Akoma So, Menya Mpo, Se Sumye Kɔkɔɔ, Nyame Nhyira Mma, and Medo No.

Daddy Lumba passed away in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra following a brief illness.
