As part of efforts to improve public transport, the government of Ghana is seeking to procure 500 new buses for state transport company, Metro Mass Transit Limited.
Ghana’s Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, made the announcement in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
According to him, the planned procurement of the buses forms part of the government’s broader efforts to revamp public transport and support Ghana’s economic transformation agenda.
He disclosed that at least 150 buses are expected to arrive in Ghana early 2026.
He lamented that the 134 operational buses of the Metro Mass have made it difficult for the company to sustain operations, expand routes, and meet growing demand for affordable and reliable public transport.
He said “Mr Speaker, I wish to announce to this House that the company is in the process of acquiring new buses – about 500 of them over a short to long term – to augment our operations.”
According to Minister Nikpe, “These buses will be deployed within the country to optimize existing routes and establish new ones in underserved areas.”
