Ghana: Major Expansion of Road Construction Planned for 2026, Says Roads Minister

The government is preparing to significantly ramp up road construction and rehabilitation projects across Ghana in 2026 as part of efforts to modernise the country’s transport network and address longstanding infrastructure gaps.

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, announced the plan during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, January 5, 2026. He said the expanded road works align with President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to improving road connectivity nationwide and are backed by budgetary allocations.

Budgetary Support for Road Infrastructure

According to Mr Agbodza, the President has repeatedly highlighted road development as a national priority during engagements with stakeholders and has ensured that funding for key projects was captured in the national budget.

“The President has made a clear commitment to Ghanaians to improve roads across the country, and that commitment has been matched with resources provided in the budget,” the minister said.

He added that the responsibility now lies with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to translate the policy direction into visible and durable infrastructure.

Projects Already Awarded

Mr Agbodza disclosed that a large number of the planned road projects have already gone through procurement and contract award processes. As a result, the Ministry’s current focus is on effective supervision, contract management, and quality assurance.

“The core projects have been awarded. What we must now do is ensure that contractors and consultants deliver quality work so the nation gets value for money,” he noted.

Increased Activity in 2025 and 2026

While acknowledging public concerns about the state of roads, the minister said Ghanaians should expect to see a noticeable increase in construction activity both in 2025 and throughout 2026 as projects move into full implementation.

The expanded programme is expected to cover:
• Rehabilitation of deteriorated trunk and feeder roads
• Completion of stalled projects
• Improvement of urban and intercity road networks

Emphasis on Quality and Accountability

Mr Agbodza assured the public that the Ministry will strengthen monitoring mechanisms to ensure contractors adhere strictly to design specifications and timelines. He stressed that poor workmanship would not be tolerated, given the scale of public investment involved.

The government’s road expansion drive is seen as a key component of its broader development agenda, aimed at boosting economic activity, improving road safety, reducing travel time, and supporting trade and regional integration.

The Ministry is expected to provide further details in the coming months on specific projects, timelines, and regional distribution as implementation progresses.
