Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a former Vice President of Ghana, has described the military helicopter crash that killed two Ghanaian ministers and six other prominent Ghanaians as a national tragedy that should not be politicized.

He made the appeal while speaking to journalists at the Jubilee House in Accra on Friday, August 8, 2025, where he laid a wreath in honor of the eight victims of the fatal crash.

While expressing his profound condolences to the families of the victims, Dr. Bawumia says “This is a national tragedy. Eight public officials on official duty… they were in the service of this country, and they had this tragic accident, and they all lost their lives.”

According to him, “This is not a partisan issue, this is a national tragedy. You should expect full participation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) because this is our national duty. We will fully participate.”

The helicopter crash, which happened on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of Ghana’s Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who were known for their firm stance against illegal mining.

The other six persons killed in the crash were Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC. The military crew Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah also perished.

A preliminary report has revealed that the officials were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi, a region noted for illegal mining activity, when the aircraftwent off radar.
