Ghana: GFA Extends Presidential Term Limit to 3 Terms, Elevates Women’s Football Representative

GFA President, Kurt Okraku

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has voted to extend its presidential term limits from two to three terms, following a decisive vote at its 31st Ordinary Session of Congress held on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

Delegates approved the constitutional amendment by 114 votes to 10 during the meeting held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

The change takes immediate effect, allowing future GFA presidents to serve up to 12 years in office through three four-year terms.

Congress also endorsed a second amendment promoting the Women’s Football Representative on the GFA Executive Council to the position of Second Vice-President — a move aimed at strengthening gender representation in football leadership.

The session was attended by representatives from the Ghana Premier League, Division One League, Women’s Premier League, regional football associations, and the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana. A total of 124 members were present for the vote.

According to the GFA, the amendments are part of ongoing reforms to enhance governance, promote stability, and raise competitive standards in Ghanaian football. Under existing statutes, the GFA president serves a four-year term; the new rules will apply to all future presidential elections.

Tuesday’s congress focused exclusively on these two statutory changes, which received overwhelming backing from member associations across the country’s football pyramid.
