Ghana fail to qualify for AFCON 2025 after draw with Angola

Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Angola on Friday.

The Black Stars took an early lead through a stunning free kick by Jordan Ayew in the 18th minute.

Ayew’s perfectly executed strike dipped past Angola’s goalkeeper, offering a rare moment of optimism in what has been a challenging campaign.

Ghana appeared to be in control for much of the first half, bolstered by a crucial penalty save from goalkeeper Manaf Nurudeen that preserved their slim advantage at halftime.

However, Angola’s relentless pressure eventually paid off in the second half.

Substitute Zini found himself unmarked in the box and headed home the equaliser, effectively extinguishing Ghana’s chances of qualifying.

This result marks a major blow for Ghana, who will miss the AFCON tournament for the first time since 2004.

Meanwhile, Angola secured their spot in Morocco, while Sudan remains well-positioned to qualify with a point in their final match. Niger also has an outside chance if they can beat Ghana and Sudan suffers a loss.

The Black Stars will conclude their lacklustre campaign on Monday against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium.
