Ghana’s Ministry of Transport has started expansion works at the Terminal 2 of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
The move aims at reducing congestion at KIA Terminal 3 and improving the country’s overall airport efficiency.
The Ministry says going forward, Terminal 2 will cater to both domestic and international flights, with operations to be rolled out in two distinct phases.
According to the Ministry and the Ghana Airport Company Limited which manages the KIA, the move is aimed at reducing the increasing passenger traffic at Terminal 3.
Speaking during a working visit to the KIA, Ghana’s Transport Minister, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, observed the importance of the expansion project, saying it formed part of broader efforts to enhance the airport’s capacity to handle growing volumes of passengers and cargo.
He says “If you visit Terminal 3 at rush hour time, you will realise that we have congestion there. So, we have partitioned Terminal 2 into two phases; one for domestic, and where we are currently standing, for international flights.”
According to the Minister, “So, that we can be able to bring some loads from terminal 3 here, thereby decongesting terminal 3 to have that kind of comfort and space for our travelers.”
