At least three persons have been reported dead and 20 others rescued after an uncompleted building collapsed at Newtown in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

The four-storey building collapsed near the Experimental D/A School on Sunday, March 29, 2026.

A group of worshippers had gathered inside the building which, according to residents, had been converted into a makeshift church.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) says the incident was reported to them at 5:01 p.m.

According to GNFS, its first and second rescue teams arrived at the scene around 5:17 p.m. and 5:19 p.m. respectively to begin the search and rescue operations.

GNFS says 23 persons – comprising 15 females, eight males and three miners – were trapped in the collapsed building.

It says 20 of the worshippers were rescued and sent to different health facilities for treatment.
