Ghana: 12 Arrested as Police and Immigration Crack Down on Cybercrime and Human Trafficking Network

A joint security operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Immigration Service has led to the arrest of 12 suspects believed to be involved in cybercrime and human trafficking activities.

According to a statement issued by the police on Saturday, March 14, the arrests were made during a coordinated operation carried out on March 12, 2026. The operation involved the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, the Surveillance Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, and immigration officers.

Authorities say six other Nigerian nationals linked to the case are currently on the run and are being actively pursued by security agencies.

Suspects allegedly involved in multiple cyber offences

Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects were operating an organised cybercrime network engaged in several online fraud schemes. These include internet fraud, identity theft, phishing scams, mobile money (MoMo) fraud, cyber extortion, blackmail, credit card and ATM fraud, and electronic forgery.

Investigators also believe the group may have links to human trafficking and migration-related crimes, highlighting growing concerns about the connection between cybercrime syndicates and transnational migration networks.

Computers and phones seized during raid

During the raid, officers confiscated several electronic devices believed to have been used to carry out the alleged crimes. The items include:

•25 laptop computers

•7 mobile phones

Authorities say the devices will undergo forensic analysis as part of ongoing investigations.

Suspects attempted to resist arrest

Police revealed that the suspects initially tried to obstruct the operation by releasing German Shepherd dogs on the officers in an attempt to prevent the arrests. However, reinforcement teams from the cyber enforcement unit and CID surveillance unit quickly intervened, allowing the operation to continue without major disruption.

Security agencies emphasise intelligence-led operations

In the statement, the Ghana Police Service stressed that collaboration between security agencies played a key role in the successful operation.

The police reiterated their commitment to intelligence-driven investigations and strong inter-agency cooperation to combat organised crime.

“The Ghana Police Service remains committed to intelligence-led operations, inter-agency coordination, and strict enforcement of the law to safeguard national security and maintain the integrity of Ghana’s digital and migration space,” the statement said.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to track down the remaining suspects and determine the full extent of the criminal network.
