GHANA: 10 Injured as Masked Gunmen Storm Ho Central Mosque Amid Imamship Dispute

At least 10 people have sustained gunshot and other injuries—with two currently in critical condition—after armed assailants attacked the Ho Central Mosque in the Volta Region on Friday, December 26, 2025.

The attack triggered widespread panic and chaos as worshippers scrambled for safety during the sporadic gunfire.

Details of the Shooting

Preliminary information suggests that approximately five masked men stormed the mosque precinct and opened fire. Mohammed Kidzah, a Youth Leader at the mosque, provided a chilling account of the incident, alleging that the attack was a targeted assassination attempt against the religious leadership.

“The incident occurred just seconds after the Regional Chief Imam had left the area. The person who directed the shooting urged the attackers on, telling them that the Chief Imam was the target and must be shot,” Kidzah recounted to Citi News.

He further noted that when the Imam managed to escape into a nearby house, the assailants turned their weapons on his family, shooting the Imam’s son in the leg.

Underlying Motive: The Imamship Dispute

While the police have yet to issue a final report on the motive, the community widely believes the violence is rooted in a protracted and long-running Imamship dispute within the mosque.

Kidzah and other local leaders have called for urgent government and traditional intervention to resolve the leadership crisis, warning that failure to address the core issues could lead to further instability in the region.

Security Intervention and Arrests

The Ghana Police Service moved swiftly to the scene following the outbreak of violence. Authorities confirmed that several suspects have been arrested and are currently assisting with investigations.

To ensure the situation does not escalate further, the military has been deployed to Ho to reinforce security and maintain order. The presence of joint security forces is expected to remain high in the community as the investigation into the masked gunmen continues.

The two victims reported to be in critical condition are currently receiving intensive medical care, while others are being treated for various degrees of injuries sustained during the melee.
