A former education minister who served in the erstwhile President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government of Ghana, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially declared his intention to contest for main opposition party in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s flagbearer position ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections.
Dr. Adutwum, currently a
Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, made his intention known in a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
According to him, he will present himself as a candidate when the party opens nominations for its presidential primaries.
He announced that “With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party.”
Dr. Adutwum, widely recognized for his leadership in Ghana’s education sector, played a central role in the rollout of the Free SHS policy and championed reforms in STEM education during his tenure as Education Minister.
His announcement adds momentum to the NPP’s internal race as the party prepares for its presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
Observers say his candidacy is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the contest, with emphasis on education, youth empowerment, and innovation-driven governance.
