Zurich, Switzerland – Reigning European champions England have been handed a challenging draw for the Women’s Euro 2025, while Spain will face a relatively easier path to the title. The draw, held on Monday, saw England grouped alongside France, the Netherlands, and debutants Wales in a tough Group D.
England, who won the tournament in 2022, will have to navigate a difficult group stage if they are to defend their title. The Netherlands, who won the tournament on home soil in 2017, will be a particularly tricky opponent, as will France, who have consistently been one of the top teams in the competition.
In contrast, Spain, the 2023 World Cup winners, have been handed a more favorable draw, grouped alongside Italy, Belgium, and Portugal in Group B. Spain have a strong record in the tournament, having reached the quarter-finals in each of the last three editions.
Germany, who have won eight of the previous 13 editions, will face a challenging group stage, grouped alongside Sweden, Denmark, and newcomers Poland in Group C. The Germans will be looking to bounce back from their defeat to England in the 2022 final.
Hosts Switzerland will kick off the tournament on July 2 against Norway in Group A, which also includes Iceland and Finland. The tournament will feature 16 teams and will run until July 27, with the final taking place in Basel.
UEFA has announced that it will award a record 41 million euros ($43 million) in prize money for the tournament, more than doubling the amount from 2022. The winning team will receive up to 5.1 million euros, with each of the 16 participating teams receiving 1.8 million euros.
