South African-born technology billionaire, Elon Musk, has announced that he’s leaving the President Donald Trump’s administration.

Musk was in charge of running the US Department of Governor Efficiency (DOGE).

But after helping lead a challenging drive to reduce the size of the US government in ways that saw thousands of jobs being lost, Musk says his time in the administration has come to an end.

He took to his social media platform, X on Wednesday evening, May 28, 2025, to publicly announce his exit from the administration.

He wrote on X: “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.”

He added: “The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

Musk’s role was temporary and his exit is not unexpected.

But his exit comes a day after he criticised the legislative centrepiece of Trump’s agenda.

He said he was “disappointed” with Trump’s budget bill, which proposes multi-trillion dollar tax breaks and a boost to defence spending.

The SpaceX and Tesla boss had told CBS in an interview that the “big, beautiful bill”, as Trump calls it, would increase the federal deficit.

Musk also said he thought it “undermines the work” of Doge.

“I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful,” Musk said. “But I don’t know if it could be both.”
