The President of Sierra Leone and new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, Julius Maada Bio, has held talks with Sania Nishtar, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gavi, the global vaccine alliance.
Mr. Bio’s meeting with Gavi’s CEO took place in Brussels ahead of this year’s Global Health Summit which is seeking to raise at least $9 billion from donors.
According to Gavi on its official website, its “high-level pledging summit, to be co-hosted by the European Union and the Gates Foundation, seeks to raise at least US$ 9 billion from our donors to fund our ambitious strategy to protect 500 million children, saving at least 8 million lives from 2026–2030, protect our world from the threat of pandemics, and protect communities from conflict, climate change and other global challenges.”
During the meeting, President Bio extended his government’s “sincere gratitude for Gavi’s enduring support to Sierra Leone and the exceptional partnership we have built.”
He also reaffirmed his commitment to championing the funding efforts for Gavi’s replenishment cycle.
