A video showcasing the lavish, Western-style wedding of the daughter of Iran’s hardline hijab enforcer, Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, has sparked widespread outrage and accusations of hypocrisy across the country.
The viral footage contrasts sharply with the strict mandatory hijab rules that Shamkhani, a senior government figure, is known for enforcing on ordinary Iranian women.
Details of the Lavish Wedding
The ceremony, which reportedly took place last year at Tehran’s luxury Espinas Palace Hotel, showed Shamkhani’s daughter, Fatemeh Setayesh, wearing a strapless gown with a plunging neckline and a veil that left her hair visible.
The event also featured Shamkhani’s wife in a backless, lace evening gown and other women without hijabs, all in violation of the public dress code enforced across Iran.
Accusations of Hypocrisy
Shamkhani, a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and former secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, has overseen harsh crackdowns on women who defy Iran’s mandatory hijab laws.
The public exposure of the wedding has ignited fierce criticism, with many Iranians calling out the double standards of leaders who impose severe restrictions on the public while appearing to flout them privately. Citizens argue that the incident highlights a stark divide between the freedoms enjoyed by the country’s elite and the restrictions faced by the general population.
