Popular Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma has issued a stinging critique of the Super Eagles and winger Samuel Chukwueze following Nigeria’s 4–2 penalty shootout loss to Morocco in the AFCON 2025 semi-finals.
In a candid address shared on social media, Bovi questioned the attitude and commitment of the national team players, suggesting that external distractions and a lack of focus were major contributors to their exit from the tournament.
Lack of Commitment and ‘Glory Seeking’
Bovi emphasized that playing for the national team is a heavy responsibility that should transcend administrative issues like unpaid bonuses. He urged players to decline national team invitations if they were not prepared to give 100 per cent.
“Football is the only thing that unites Nigeria… If you are playing for Nigeria, regardless of how the NFF treats you, understand that you have the potential to unite Nigerians,” Bovi stated.
Addressing the penalty shootout specifically, Bovi expressed disappointment in the players’ psychological approach:
“I forgive Samuel Chukwueze for missing a penalty. But you need to understand that the weight of a nation lies in your hands. But if you go for glory before victory, more often than not, you will become the victim.”
Social Media and the ‘Fan Trap’
A significant portion of Bovi’s criticism focused on the influence of social media and the “praise” players receive from the public, which he believes has clouded their judgment and affected their performance.
- Social Media Distractions: He alleged that players have become too focused on their online image and public acclaim.
- Misunderstanding Fandom: Bovi provided a harsh reality check regarding the nature of fan support: “You don’t understand that the fans don’t like you, they like what you do.”
- The Bonus Narrative: He advised players to “let it go” if the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) delays payments, rather than allowing it to impact their effort on the pitch.
Context of the Exit
The Super Eagles’ journey ended in Rabat on Wednesday in a tense encounter against the host nation, Morocco. Despite a resilient defensive performance, the team failed to secure a win in regulation or extra time, leading to the shootout where two misses—including Chukwueze’s—proved fatal to Nigeria’s title hopes.
Bovi’s remarks reflect a broader sentiment of frustration among Nigerian football fans who feel the current generation of stars possesses immense talent but lacks the grit and “nationalistic spirit” seen in past eras.
