China Opens World’s Tallest Bridge in Guizhou, Slashing Travel Time Across Canyon

China has inaugurated the world’s tallest bridge in Guizhou Province, a feat of engineering that cuts travel time across the Huajiang Grand Canyon from nearly two hours to just two minutes.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, opened on Sunday after three years of construction, rises 625 meters above the Beipan River. Stretching 2,890 meters with a 1,420-meter main span, it is now recognized as the world’s longest-span steel truss girder suspension bridge built in mountainous terrain.

Dubbed a “landmark achievement” by provincial officials, the project incorporated 21 patented technologies and breakthroughs in wind-resistance and high-altitude construction. Engineers relied on drones, satellite navigation, smart monitoring systems, and ultra-high-strength materials to achieve millimeter-level precision in one of the world’s most challenging terrains.

Guizhou, one of China’s less developed provinces, has earned the title “bridge capital of the world.” It now hosts nearly half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges, with more than 30,000 built across its rugged landscape. The total length of its completed and ongoing bridge projects exceeds 5,400 kilometers—almost equal to China’s north-to-south span.
