Botswana’s education authorities have activated emergency protocols to safeguard students and schools as heavy rains and potential flooding threaten parts of the country during the ongoing national examinations.
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism recently issued a severe weather alert forecasting intense thundershowers across southern Botswana, warning that the conditions could lead to flash floods and disrupt essential services.
In response, the Ministry of
Child Welfare and Basic Education announced that it is closely monitoring the situation through its regional offices. Ministry spokesperson Potso Thari said on Tuesday that the government has placed schools in affected areas on high alert.
“The ministry is working with other agencies to ensure the safety of all learners. Should conditions worsen, appropriate steps will be taken to protect students and staff,” Thari stated.
With final examinations underway, officials have assured parents and the public that contingency plans are in place to minimize disruption to academic schedules. The ministry also urged families to remain vigilant and ensure children avoid flooded areas during the storms.
Authorities continue to coordinate with local disaster management teams to assess risks and provide timely updates as weather conditions evolve.
