Bank of Ghana Postpones Cedi 60th Anniversary Launch Over Deaths of Ministers, 6 Others

Ghana’s central bank has announced the postponement of the launch of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Ghana Cedi following the tragic military helicopter crash which killed two Ghanaian ministers and six others on Wednesday.

According to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) in a statement, “We regret to announce that the launch has been postponed”

The launch of the anniversary celebrations was scheduled to take place on Friday, August 8, 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

But with Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama declaring a three-day of national mourning on Wednesday, August 6, the BoG opted to postpone the launch, extending its sympathies to the bereaved families.

BoG says in its statement: “The Bank extends its deepest condolences to His Excellency the President of the Republic, and families of the departed,” adding that “The Bank appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all its stakeholders and the general public during this period of national mourning.”

The plane crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six others.

The plane crash happened in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The other persons who died in the crash as confirmed by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, are Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, and Samuel Aboagye a former Parliamentary Candidate, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of NDC.

The crew members are Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The Ghana Army say the victims were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi when the aircraft went off radar.
