The Audit Service of Ghana has in its latest report accused the University of Ghana (UG) of inflating its employee compensations by Ghc 59.2 million between 2022 and 2024.

According to the special payroll verification audit report, the University of Ghana was the biggest offender in overstating salary claims among governor institutions.

Most of the large discrepancies between employee compensation claims and verified payments at the UG occurred in 2024, a year in which Ghana held a presidential and parliamentary election.

According to the Audit Service report, between 2022 and 2024, the University of Ghana submitted salary claims amounting to Ghc 1.09 billion.

However, only Ghc 1.03 billion was cleared by the Auditor-General’s Office, showing Ghc 59.24 million in overstatement.

The latest report by the Ghana Audit Service covers financial recoveries based on recommendations from 2020 to 2023 Auditor General reports. They include disallowances and payroll savings up to December 31, 2024.

Overall, the Auditor-General flagged GH¢38.9 billion for recovery.

But the report said only GH¢12.7 billion, about 32.6%, has been retrieved.
