An American basketball player, Jarred Dwayne Shaw, age 34, has been arrested in Indonesia for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into the country. If found guilty, per Indonesian anti-drug laws, Shaw faces up to life sentence or death penalty if found guilty, Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police Chief, Ronald Sipayung told a news conference.
Shaw was arrested on May 7, 2025, after police raided his apartment in Tangerang Regency and seized 132 pieces of cannabis candies.
Sipayung reportedly said Shaw’s arrest followed a tip from the airport’s customs that reported he had received a suspicious airway package from Thailand where cannabis has been decriminalized since November 2024.
Indonesia has strict anti-drug laws. Convicted smugglers are sometimes executed by firing squad.
The American basketballer has been playing for a number of clubs in the Indonesian Basketball League since 2022. In 2024, he signed a deal with Tangerang Hawk.
Sipayung says during interrogation, Shaw told police that he wanted to share the cannabis candy with fellow basketball players.
The police chief revealed that the candy contained a total gross weight of 869 grams (30.6 ounces) of illegal cannabinoid inside a package.
According to him, “We are still running the investigation to uncover the international drugs network behind this case and to stop its distribution.
The Associated Press citing the Indonesian Ministry of Immigration and Corrections’ data, reported that about 530 individuals including 96 foreigners, are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug-related crimes.
The last executions in Indonesia took place in July 2016 and those executed were an Indonesian and three foreigners.
