Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has indefinitely adjourned parliamentary proceedings following intense disagreements between MPs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
The session was marked by heated debates over which caucus holds the Majority in the House. Bagbin’s decision to adjourn came after receiving a communication from the Supreme Court instructing him to stay his earlier ruling that declared four parliamentary seats vacant. However, the Speaker provided little detail on the Court’s directive, leaving MPs and observers with unanswered questions about its implications.
The vacant seats, which include two from the NPP, one from the NDC, and one independent, have been the subject of a legal dispute ever since Bagbin’s ruling on October 17. The Supreme Court’s intervention has now put that ruling on hold, adding complexity to an already volatile political situation.

Earlier in the day, NPP MPs vacated the Chamber in protest, leaving the NDC to occupy both sides of the House. This walkout was a response to the ongoing disagreement over the Majority status, a contentious issue since Bagbin’s earlier declaration. Without the presence of NPP MPs, the House lacked the quorum required to conduct official business, forcing Bagbin to adjourn proceedings.
The Speaker’s decision not to fully disclose the contents of the Supreme Court communication only deepens the uncertainty surrounding the future of Parliament and the status of the contested parliamentary seats. The indefinite adjournment has left both parties awaiting clarity as the legal battle continues.
