In a significant development in a case that has spanned almost 10 years, the High Court in Accra has granted bail to Gregory Afoko, a key suspect in the 2015 murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama. Afoko, who has been in detention since 2015, was granted bail in the sum of GH₵500,000 with two sureties.

Afoko is accused of conspiring with others to assassinate Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his Bolgatanga home. The incident occurred on May 20, 2015, when Mahama was attacked with acid, resulting in severe bodily injuries that ultimately led to his death.

The bail ruling marks a major milestone in the case, which has been ongoing for nearly a decade. While Afoko’s bail signals progress for his defense, the trial remains ongoing as the state continues its prosecution. As part of the bail conditions, Afoko has been ordered to report himself to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service every two weeks.

The case has seen several twists and turns, including the arrest of a second suspect, Asabke Alangdi, who was sentenced to death after being found guilty of conspiracy to commit crime and murder. Afoko’s trial started in 2016 and was nearing completion when the Attorney-General entered a nolle prosequi to discontinue the trial, following the arrest of Alangdi.
