7 Ghanaian Students Prevented From Writing WASSCE Exam Due To Lateness
At least seven Ghanaian students at Labone Senior High in Accra, Ghana, have been blocked from writing their social studies exam for the 2024 WASSCE because they reportedly arrived late for the exam on August 26.
Officials of the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) had conducted routine monitoring before preventing the students from writing the exam.
Dr. Rosemond Wilson, Head of the WAEC National Office, reinforced the necessity of following the 30-minute pre-exam seating requirement to prevent cheating and ensure a fair examination environment.
She said: “In our regulations, students must be seated 30 minutes prior to the start of a paper and cannot leave the exam room 30 minutes before the paper ends. Supervisors must enforce this rule to maintain order during the exam, and students need to provide acceptable reasons for any lateness.”
However, a number of the seven Ghanaian students who were blocked from writing their exam gave different reasons for being late.
Some said they were late because they got caught in traffic, while one other student claimed he was sick.
Meanwhile, Headmistress of the Labone Senior High School, Rebecca Acorlor, observed the need to respect examination protocols.
She said: “When the paper starts, we shouldn’t let the students in. These students this is not the first time, and they have come a whole one hour after the start of the paper so I cannot in any way allow them.”
The Headmistress noted that “I am not happy about it, but this is the situation I find myself in.”
