This week’s episode of Africa Now Radio with Nandi Madida brings an exclusive conversation with Nigerian Afro-dancehall sensation 1da Banton, as he reflects on his musical journey, cultural influences, and latest project. The show airs this Friday, January 31st, on Apple Music 1 and will also be broadcast on YFM Ghana throughout the weekend.
A Journey Through Port Harcourt’s Musical Heritage
Speaking with Nandi Madida via FaceTime, 1da Banton delves into his Port Harcourt upbringing, crediting the city’s rich music scene for shaping his artistry. From growing up around local stars like Timaya to being immersed in reggae and dancehall sounds from Shaggy, Beenie Man, and Bob Marley, his unique sound was forged by a diverse mix of influences.
“My general upbringing was reggae-influenced,” he shares. “In Port Harcourt, we listen to lots of reggae and dancehall music. Obviously, that influenced the way I interpret music today.”
‘WALK WITH ME’: A Tribute to Cultural Roots
1da Banton’s latest EP, WALK WITH ME, is deeply personal, with its opening track paying homage to his southern Nigerian heritage. The rhythmic patterns are inspired by traditional music from Rivers State, where he grew up.
“That’s my traditional music. I always used to love going to watch the masquerade—a traditional festival that happens every December or January,” he explains. “It’s really African music. I love pure, original African sounds.”
Staying Grounded in a Fast-Paced Industry
Despite his rising success, 1da Banton remains humble, attributing his calm demeanor to a natural disposition for peace and creativity. “I’m just chilled; I like peace a lot. I really love making music, and that’s why I even learned how to produce—it makes me feel really good,” he says.

Alongside the interview, Africa Now Radio will spotlight the five hottest African tracks of the moment, featuring new music from Ayo Maff, Black Sherif & Fireboy DML, Kashcoming, Khalil Harrison & Scotts Maphuma feat DJ Exit & Tyler ICU, and Makhadzi Entertainment feat. Dr Skaro.
