Police in Zimbabwe have detained a 39-year-old woman, Netsai Chikuni, after her three-year-old son was found dead in a house in Hobhouse, Mutare. Authorities say the incident occurred in the early hours of November 20 and has left the normally quiet community in shock.
According to the Manicaland Provincial Police, Chikuni had arrived the previous evening at the home of her brother, who was away at the time. Tenants living at the property allowed her inside after confirming with the landlord.
Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said that tenants reported unusual behaviour from Chikuni overnight. They told police she appeared distressed and was acting erratically. At around 1 a.m., tenants said they heard shouting and sounds of a struggle coming from the room where she and her child were staying. Out of fear, they did not intervene but contacted neighbours and police once the disturbance stopped.
When officers arrived, they found the child, Ngonidzashe Njerera, unresponsive. Chikuni was also found injured and was taken into custody. Officials say she will undergo psychological evaluation as part of the investigation, which will determine the circumstances leading to the child’s death.
Neighbours and tenants described the event as deeply unsettling, noting that Chikuni appeared confused when she arrived and that her behaviour quickly escalated. Police have not yet established a motive and say they are exploring both mental-health and criminal-responsibility angles.
Authorities have urged the public to allow the investigation to proceed while the community deals with the emotional impact of the tragedy. Chikuni is expected to appear in court once medical assessments and preliminary inquiries are complete.
