Maria Zaloumis and her husband, Nathaniel Barthram
A Zambian farmer Maria Zaloumis, 40, and her Nigerian husband, Nathaniel Barthram, 34, have been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of Enock Simfukwe Kasengele, who died at Kabwe Central Hospital in Zambia on August 17, 2025.
Police say Simfukwe was initially detained after being accused of attempting to attack Zaloumis with acid.
However, he later died in custody, and a postmortem examination revealed that his death was caused by blunt force head injuries and brain trauma.
The couple was arrested together with three of their farm employees, identified as Gift Daka, 23; Fortune Mutangeti, 27; and Daniel Chilowa, 40.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the arrests and urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue.
