Zambia will export its first-ever consignment of beef to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in the nation’s agricultural trade and regional integration efforts.
President Hakainde Hichilema announced the development on Tuesday during a meeting with traditional leaders ahead of the Southern Province Investment and Trade Exposition in Livingstone.
The inaugural shipment will come from the chiefdoms of Mukobela and Mungaila in Southern Province, the heart of Zambia’s cattle industry. The beef is being processed at a modern abattoir in Kalomo, reflecting the government’s focus on improving agricultural infrastructure and creating export opportunities.
For years, Zambia’s beef sector has primarily served the domestic market, limited by infrastructure and regulatory challenges. However, recent reforms and investments in processing facilities have enabled the country to access new regional markets—especially the DRC, where demand for high-quality meat continues to grow.
The initiative forms part of Zambia’s broader economic diversification strategy aimed at boosting rural incomes, expanding exports, and deepening trade relations within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Officials say agricultural exports such as beef will play a central role in promoting inclusive growth, enhancing food security, and strengthening Zambia’s position as a competitive regional supplier.
