Zambia: Lungu family in mediated talks to end funeral dispute

The Zambian government and the family of the late former president Edgar Lungu have begun mediated talks aimed at resolving a months-long impasse over his funeral arrangements.

In a joint statement, signed by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa and family spokesperson Makebi Zulu, the two parties said they have agreed to a mediated process to address outstanding issues surrounding the burial.

The mediators have been jointly appointed and the process is expected to balance state protocols with the family’s personal wishes.

“We have agreed to employ a mediated process that will uphold the dignity of the late President while addressing the concerns of his family,” the statement read, calling for public patience and respect for the privacy of the discussions.

The dispute dates back to June following Lungu’s death in South Africa.

His family initially sought a private burial abroad, citing emotional strain and concerns over political interference, particularly the involvement of President Hakainde Hichilema in the funeral proceedings.

The Zambian government, however, insisted on a state funeral in Lusaka in line with national protocol for former heads of state.

Legal battles ensued in South African courts, culminating in a ruling that Lungu’s remains be repatriated to Zambia.

The standoff has drawn widespread public attention and ignited political tensions, with Lungu’s Patriotic Front party accusing the government of disregarding the family’s wishes.

The mediation now underway is seen as a breakthrough after three months of deadlock.

Both sides have pledged to approach the talks with sincerity, emphasising unity, healing and respect for Lungu’s legacy.
