On July 29, 2025, a 20-year-old woman died after collapsing on a bus traveling from Foz do Iguaçu to São Paulo, with 26 iPhones glued to her body, in an incident suspected to be linked to smuggling. The tragedy occurred when the bus stopped at a restaurant in Guarapuava, Paraná, Brazil. Emergency services were called after she reported breathing difficulties. Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) paramedics found her awake but struggling to breathe, soon exhibiting signs of respiratory distress and a possible seizure. Despite 45 minutes of resuscitation efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
During treatment, medics discovered 26 iPhones glued directly to her skin, prompting suspicions of illegal trafficking. Military Police, alongside forensic teams from the Scientific Police and Civil Police, investigated the scene. A sniffer dog found no drugs, but several bottles of alcohol were seized from her luggage. The iPhones were sent to Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service for further examination. The Paraná Civil Police are awaiting forensic reports to determine the cause of death, with investigations ongoing to explore the phones’ origin and potential links to a smuggling network. The woman’s identity has not been disclosed.
