World’s Oldest Person Dies In Her Sleep At Age 117

The world’s oldest person, Maria Branyas Morera, has reportedly died at the age of 117.

Morera is an American-born Spanish woman.

Her death was announced by her family.

According to her family in a post written in Spanish, “A few days ago she told us: ‘One day I will leave here. I will not try coffee again, nor yogurt’.

“I will also leave my memories, my reflections and I will cease to exist in this body. One day I don’t know, but it’s very close, this long journey will be over,” the world’s oldest person is quoted as saying.

The world’s oldest person passed away on August 19, 2024 in Olot, Spain, an employee at her nursing home, Residencia Santa Maria del Tura, announced on X.

The post indicated that she died peacefully in her sleep.

Ms. Morera was born on March 4, 1907, in San Francisco.

According to news stories written about her, Ms. Morera grew up in several American cities, including New Orleans.

Her father, a journalist, reportedly started a Spanish-language magazine in New Orleans that went bankrupt.

“Facing dire straits, the family returned to Spain when Ms. Morera was a child”, The New York Times reported.
