Wesley Girls’ High School Makes History as Two Alumnae Lead Ghana’s Political and Judicial Landscape

Wesley Girls’ High School (Gey Hey) has long been a breeding ground for excellence, and this year, it solidified its place in history as two of its distinguished alumnae took center stage in Ghana’s governance.

On January 7, 2025, Her Excellency Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was sworn in as Ghana’s first female Vice President—a milestone that not only broke barriers but also reaffirmed the legacy of the all-girls’ institution. In a powerful moment, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, also a Gey Hey alumna, administered the oath of office, marking an extraordinary occasion of female leadership and sisterhood at the highest levels of government.

The news sent waves of joy through the Gey Hey community, further cementing the school’s reputation for producing trailblazers in various fields.

A Legacy of Giving Back: 2003 Year Group Transforms Campus

As if history-making wasn’t enough, this year’s Wesley Girls’ High School Speech Day, hosted by the 2003 year group, was nothing short of spectacular. With support from the 1973, 1983, and 1993 year groups, the alumni undertook several transformational projects, including:

A facelift of the administration block at the Legacy Resource Centre, equipped with modern office facilities, washrooms, and an improved water supply system.

Renovation of the Form 2 block to provide a more conducive learning environment.

Upgrading the school’s kitchen, including new washrooms for the kitchen staff.

Revamping the school’s entrance with a redesigned gate and wall, enhancing the institution’s prestige.

Their efforts were widely applauded, with many admiring their dedication to the school’s continuous improvement.

“Kakumdo Met Gala” – A Fashion Extravaganza

As tradition dictates, Speech Day was not only a time for reflection and celebration but also an opportunity for Gey Hey ladies to showcase their signature style. Dubbed the “Kakumdo Met Gala,” the event saw old students and current students alike donning elegant yellow and green kente, making bold fashion statements that took social media by storm.

From sophisticated Christie Brown designs to creatively styled traditional outfits, the fashion display was a testament to the school’s culture of excellence and class. The event was filled with camaraderie, laughter, and the unmistakable spirit of sisterhood.

A Legacy That Lives On

Rev. Lockhart, a former headmaster of Mfantsipim School, once predicted, “In a few years, the people of this country will be amazed at the number of its influential citizens who owe allegiance to this school.” That prophecy continues to hold true as Gey Hey girls remain at the forefront of leadership and development.

With an ever-growing list of distinguished alumnae and an unwavering commitment to excellence, Wesley Girls’ High School continues to shine—both in Ghana and beyond.

As the 2004 year group prepares to take the mantle next year, expectations are high. One thing is certain: the Gey Hey legacy will only get stronger.
