WAEC Releases 2024 BECE Provisional Results, Withholds Results from 149 Schools Over Exam Irregularities

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of provisional results for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which includes both school and private candidates.

In a statement issued on Saturday, October 19, 2024, WAEC shared that school results will be distributed to individual institutions through district education offices.

However, the release of results was marked by several cases of examination malpractice. WAEC’s investigation uncovered various forms of misconduct, leading to penalties during their review meeting on October 16, 2024. As a result, the subject results for 377 school candidates and 3 private candidates were cancelled. These individuals were implicated in bringing unauthorized materials into the exam halls or engaging in collusion during the exams.

In addition to these cancellations, the results of 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate were nullified completely. A further 33 school candidates and 3 private candidates are currently under investigation, with their results being withheld pending further inquiry. Moreover, subject results from 149 schools have also been held back due to reported irregularities, with WAEC indicating that these results could either be cancelled or cleared depending on ongoing investigations.

In terms of participation, WAEC reported that 569,236 students took part in the school-based BECE this year, with almost an even split between boys (282,703) and girls (286,533). This figure includes candidates with special needs, such as those with visual and hearing impairments, who were accommodated during the exams. However, 3,845 candidates did not show up for the exams despite registering.

For the private examination, a total of 1,390 candidates sat for the BECE, consisting of 750 males and 640 females. The exams were conducted across 15 centres in key regional locations, but 57 of the registered candidates did not attend.

WAEC has assured the public that it remains committed to ensuring the integrity of its exams and that all cases of malpractice are being thoroughly investigated before final decisions are made on withheld results.
