US Court Slashes Anas’ $18M Defamation Award Against Kennedy Agyapong to $500

A US court has dramatically reduced the $18 million defamation award initially granted to Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in his case against former MP Kennedy Agyapong to just $500. The decision followed a motion for remittitur filed by Kennedy Agyapong, in which he requested that the award be lowered.

Anas acknowledged the judge’s decision on Facebook, but emphasized that his pursuit of the case was not about the money. “Our victory is in the judgment and not the award,” he wrote. “This fight has not been about the money, but rather, fight for truth and justice.” Anas explained that Agyapong’s motion itself was an admission of guilt, noting that the court granted Agyapong’s request because the jury’s $18 million award was considered excessive.

Despite the reduced award, Anas maintained that the judge upheld the core verdict – that Kennedy Agyapong had defamed him. “I am happy that not a single allegation was proven against me in court when Kennedy Agyapong was given full opportunity to substantiate,” Anas said. The case stems from defamatory statements made by Kennedy Agyapong and media personality Frederick Asamoah during an episode of The Daddy Fred Show.

The pair accused Anas of being a criminal, a thief, and linked him to the 2019 murder of journalist Ahmed Suale, following the release of the Number 12 exposé on corruption in Ghanaian football. In March 2025, a US jury in Essex County, New Jersey, ruled in Anas’ favour and awarded him $18 million in damages. The verdict came as a significant development, especially after a Ghanaian court in 2018 dismissed a similar defamation suit Anas had filed against Agyapong.

*A Victory for Truth and Justice*

Anas’ commitment to fighting corruption and his willingness to take on powerful individuals like Kennedy Agyapong have earned him recognition and respect globally. Despite the reduced award, Anas remains resolute in his pursuit of truth and justice. “I will continue in my relentless fight against corruption – and in doing that, continue to name, shame, and jail,” he stated.

*The Significance of the Verdict*

The verdict in the defamation case is significant, not just for the award amount, but for the principle it upholds. The court’s decision confirms that Kennedy Agyapong defamed Anas, and that Anas’ reputation was damaged as a result. The case highlights the importance of responsible journalism and the need for public figures to be mindful of their words and actions.

*The Road Ahead*

While the US award has now been reduced, Anas has stated that many avenues remain open to him. He remains committed to his work as an investigative journalist and will continue to expose corruption and wrongdoing. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of a free press and the role that journalists play in holding those in power accountable.

*Conclusion*

The reduction of the award amount may be seen as a minor setback, but Anas’ victory in the court is a significant win for truth and justice. The case demonstrates the importance of standing up for one’s rights and reputation, even in the face of powerful adversaries. Anas’ commitment to his work and his willingness to take on challenging cases like this one make him a formidable force in the fight against corruption.
