University of Ghana Issues COVID-19 Health Alert Amid Case Resurgence

The Health Service Directorate of the University of Ghana has issued a health alert following what it describes as a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in and around its campus community.

In a statement released on Monday, June 23, 2025, the Health Directorate revealed that a number of suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases have been detected within its immediate environment. While specific figures were not provided, the alert has prompted immediate precautionary measures to prevent any possible outbreak.

In its statement, the Directorate advised wearing a nose or face mask during large gatherings, avoiding crowded places where possible, washing hands frequently with soap under running water, and maintaining physical distancing amongst others. These measures form part of efforts to prevent any potential spread of the virus within the university community.

“We are also monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates regularly,” the statement implied, highlighting that although Ghana has seen a relatively calm COVID-19 situation through much of 2024, the virus still poses a risk, especially in dense academic settings.

With over 50,000 students and thousands of administrative and academic staff on campus, the university is prioritising preventive action. The Health Directorate has also activated its internal public health response system and shared emergency contact lines for the community to report symptoms or make inquiries.

The university community is encouraged to stay informed through official communication channels and avoid panic, as authorities work to monitor and manage the situation.
