Uganda: UPDF Truck Captured Ferrying NRM Supporters, Robert Kyagulanyi Accuses Museveni’s Regime of Lawlessness

In a recent post shared on his official X handle, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the prominent opposition leader, has accused the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) of violating electoral and government guidelines by transporting individuals allegedly paid to attend National Resistance Movement (NRM) events. The incident, which occurred yesterday in Kampala, has reignited discussions surrounding the use of state resources in partisan politics, with Kyagulanyi condemning the government for its flagrant disregard of the law.

Alleged Use of Government Resources for NRM Events

In a post that quickly gained traction, Kyagulanyi, who is also the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), highlighted a truck, reportedly belonging to the UPDF, that was seen ferrying individuals.

According to the opposition leader, these individuals are typically paid to attend NRM events, an act he claims is a clear violation of the law. The law, Kyagulanyi asserts, categorically prohibits the use of government resources for partisan political purposes.

“I remain eternally convinced that Museveni, like all despots before him, will end up on the dustbin of history!” Kyagulanyi stated in his post, denouncing what he referred to as a “criminal regime.” He further expressed his belief that the government’s actions reflect a wider trend of impunity, with no regard for laws or the rights of opposition supporters.

Violating Electoral Commission Guidelines

Kyagulanyi’s statement also focused on another issue related to electoral procedures. He accused the government of flouting regulations and guidelines set by the Electoral Commission (EC), particularly with respect to the submission of presidential endorsement forms. Under current guidelines, only five individuals are permitted to accompany any presidential aspirant on their representatives returning these forms. However, Kyagulanyi claims that the NRM, with the assistance of the police and military, has violated this rule by “boisterously interfering” with Kampala’s trade activities, inviting media to capture live their mischievousness and even going so far as to close some roads.

“This kind of behavior not only undermines the electoral process but also infringes on the rights of the people of Kampala to go about their daily activities without undue interference,” Kyagulanyi remarked.

Museveni’s Regime Accused of Lawlessness and Suppression

Kyagulanyi’s message is part of his ongoing campaign against the leadership of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who has been in power for over closing four decades, if he manages to go beyond this year. He continues to accuse the president of suppressing opposition activities and employing unlawful tactics to maintain control. From alleged abductions of opposition supporters to the disruption of legitimate political events, the opposition leader claims that Museveni’s regime will stop at nothing to stifle any challenge to its rule.

Despite these challenges, Kyagulanyi remains resolute in his belief that Museveni’s reign will eventually come to an end. “No matter how long they stay in power, all tyrants eventually meet their end,” Kyagulanyi said.

Public Outcry and Growing Tensions

The recent truck incident has sparked widespread public outrage, with many Ugandans condemning the use of government resources for political gain. Social media platforms have been abuzz with calls for greater accountability and transparency in the country’s political system. The UPDF, police, and other security agencies are yet to respond to Kyagulanyi’s claims.
